Champsecret has a small pilgrim hostel run on a voluntary donation basis. We can also provide a list of nearby accommodation, including gîtes and Airbnb rentals, if you need one.
For those who would like to sleep in their own tent or under the stars, the association makes a camping field available.

This is the original spirit of pilgrimage. Sleeping outdoors means reconnecting with the elements: the cold and the wind, but also birdsong and shooting stars. It brings a sense of complete freedom: stopping when you wish and setting off when you wish.
Essential equipment: you carry your own shelter (a lightweight tent or tarp)!
The tarp: our favourite. A simple sheet stretched over your walking stick, weighing just a few hundred grams. It keeps the dew off while letting you breathe and see the sky. Do not worry: we will show you how to put it up!
The sleeping mat: essential for resting your muscles and insulating you from the cold ground.
The sleeping bag: we do not have fur! A good sleeping bag with a 5°C comfort rating is essential.
- The groundsheet: very useful for protecting your sleeping mat from punctures at night and keeping ants away during a nap!

Independence & Sharing
On Le Sentier, each Companion takes care of their own meals. There is no canteen, but there is a large, welcoming shared table. Everyone carries their own food, and it is customary to share bread, cheese or chocolate at the evening camp. Think of an outdoor bring-and-share meal.Discovering Local Food
Forget freeze-dried meals! You are walking through a region full of good food. Make the most of each stop to discover local specialities:
In Champsecret: authentic AOP farmhouse Camembert, made with raw milk and ladled by hand, available at the village shop or the farm.
In Lonlay-l’Abbaye: the biscuit factory’s famous galettes, chocolate and artisan ice cream.
Along the way: poiré (Normandy’s answer to champagne!), Calvados to warm the heart, and perhaps tripe or oysters for the more adventurous.
Practical Tips
Shops: the villages along the route have what you need, including small supermarkets and bakeries.
Opening hours: be aware that shops in Normandy are often closed on Sunday afternoons and Mondays. Plan your supplies when you arrive!
Budget: allow between €10 and €20 a day, depending on your appetite and thirst.
Equipment: a camping stove is useful for coffee or soup, but is not essential if you eat a cold lunch.
On Le Sentier, your relationship with your body changes. Living outdoors, with skin weathered by the wind and sun, feels like a natural protective layer. The dust of the path is part of the journey. Accepting that you will not be as clean as you are in town is already a way of letting go.
The Shelter Option
For those who need this moment of relaxation to recover:
With the Shelter Option, you have access to a shower every evening, except on the final night at Mont-Saint-Michel.
Exception: there is no shower on arrival at Mont-Saint-Michel (though the sea is close by!).
The Providence Option
For dedicated campers, this is a cheerful and inventive return to basics:
At camp: every campsite has a drinking-water supply. Washing is simple: a flannel, a basin or a splash of cold water for the brave!
On the trail: a hidden waterfall, a clear stream or an old washhouse… nature sometimes offers unexpected places to bathe.
A bonus: halfway through the walk (Day 2 in Mortain), everyone has access to showers!
In Your Wash Bag:
Biodegradable Soap Required: we often wash outdoors. Bring 100% biodegradable soap, such as Marseille or Aleppo soap, to help protect the rivers.
Microfibre Towel: lightweight and quick to dry.
Wipes: useful for a quick freshen-up (never leave them in nature!).
Le Sentier is a non-profit adventure run by an association. Your contribution directly supports the local economy of the villages we walk through, away from the main tourist routes. It is a walk rooted in solidarity.
Membership — The Foundation — €100
Everything is transparent. Your membership covers:
Safety: accompaniment by our volunteer Companions, equipment costs and insurance.
Administration: tourism registration, professional liability insurance and operating costs.
Equipment costs: the Companions’ walking shoes, backpacks and sleeping mats.
Communication: website, transport, craft work…
Journey Costs — Supporting Local Services — €90
This covers the logistical costs of your adventure and is passed on in full to local providers along Le Sentier: local councils, the Gîte du Moulin, the professional bay guide, the return coach and others.
1. The Discovery Offer
€175 per person for all 2027 departures, at this special rate, including membership and journey costs.
The Discovery Offer reduces the €190 total detailed above to €175.
2. The Returning Walker Offer
€90 for association members, allowing you to return as often as you wish within the same calendar year at a minimal cost.
3. The Solidarity Offer
€90, exclusively for people experiencing financial hardship. Supporting evidence is required, and this offer cannot be combined with the Shelter Option.
Here you manage your own daily budget, unlike an all-inclusive package holiday.
Food: allow €10–20 a day to enjoy local produce from village shops and bakeries. Choose a simple picnic or a meal at the pub!
Accommodation: included in your journey costs if you choose outdoor sleeping (the Providence Option, under the stars or in a tent). Add €100 for the Shelter Option in gîtes, pilgrim accommodation or a hall.
Champsecret is a small village in the Orne, away from the main tourist routes, with no train or bus service.
To reach us, the nearest railway station is Flers, 20 km away.
Accommodation on the night before departure is not included in the four nights of the stay. On request, we can send you a list of accommodation around Champsecret, or you can pitch your tent on private land. Each walker chooses and books their own accommodation directly.
You are welcome at the Secret Knight for our friendly gathering on the evening before departure.
The walk starts on the scheduled day in Champsecret at 9 am, opposite the Secret Knight, near the church. You can have breakfast there (the association offers bread, milk, tea, coffee, butter and jam in return for a voluntary donation) and leave your car in a large, quiet car park.
We return to Champsecret the day after arriving at the Mont. We leave Mont-Saint-Michel at around 11 am. If you prefer to make your own way home, you can reach Pontorson railway station by bus from the Mont.
A professional travel operator provides a return coach to Champsecret, departing from Mont-Saint-Michel at 1 pm and included in all our offers.
We expect to arrive in Champsecret at around 2.30 pm.
On the final walking day of Le Sentier, the bay lies between us and Mont-Saint-Michel!
A professional bay guide accompanies us to make the crossing safely.
Crossing the bay depends on many factors: the tide, of course, but also the weather, shifting sandbanks, the season and the timing.
The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel must be taken seriously. In the Middle Ages, people often became trapped in sand or drowned. Even today, unwary visitors are regularly caught out.
For these reasons, we cannot guarantee a bay crossing on every walk. Fog, an unexpected storm, high river levels, unstable ground or a timing problem can make the crossing impossible.
Fortunately, this is very rare. If we cannot cross, we can follow the GR walking route alongside the salt marshes. It offers another remarkable view, which some find just as distinctive as crossing the bay.
This route beside the salt marshes allows us to reach Mont-Saint-Michel when weather conditions prevent a bay crossing.
For every walk, we therefore rely on the expertise and decisions of the bay professionals.
For 2027 departures, walkers must be aged 10 or over. The route covers around 100 km over four days of walking, followed by a morning at Mont-Saint-Michel: five days of adventure in total. You need to be able to walk long stages on successive days while carrying your backpack.
On past walks, for example, the youngest walker was six and a half and the oldest was 80. These historical examples do not change the minimum age of 10 for 2027. Sometimes children walk Le Sentier laughing, while marathon runners find it hard. Some people with little walking experience find it easy, while more experienced walkers may find it more demanding.
There is no fixed rule. This is not a race, and we will always look after walkers who need to slow down. If you are unsure, tell us about your walking experience and ask your questions before registering. We can explain the route and how the walk is organised.

If you would like to stay in a gîte or pilgrim hostel, we can send you a list of accommodation around Champsecret on request. You choose and book it yourself. This night is at your own expense, in addition to the four nights included in the adventure. You can meet the group at the Secret Knight, our association’s base, over a bring-your-own meal.
If you sleep in your own tent, under a tarp or under the stars, we have private land where you can set up your shelter.
For all departures, the Discovery Offer costs €175 per person and includes four nights of camping during the adventure. The Shelter Option adds €100, bringing the total to €275 for four nights in gîtes or pilgrim accommodation. With the Shelter Option, you have access to a shower every evening, except on the final night at Mont-Saint-Michel.
Meals are at your own expense and are not included in the offers. You organise your own meals and buy your food in the villages along the route. The association does not provide catering for the group. This is part of each person’s independence during the adventure.
Yes, you can come without knowing any of the other participants. You join a group and share the path with them. Several Companions accompany you throughout the five days, from the four walking days to the morning at Mont-Saint-Michel. You can also meet the group at the Secret Knight on the evening before departure.
Everyone carries their own backpack during the walk. Le Sentier does not offer a luggage transfer service. The weight depends on your equipment and the option you choose, so there is no single figure that suits everyone. We suggest no more than 10 kg for this type of adventure, or a maximum of 12 kg including water and a sandwich. With the Shelter Option, four nights in gîtes or pilgrim accommodation replace camping, so you do not need to carry a tent or sleeping mat. Your backpack may weigh less than 6 kg. Remember, however, that you still need a lightweight sleeping bag.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to accept dogs on Le Sentier for several years because the operator providing the return coach to Champsecret does not allow them on its vehicles.
Together Along the Way
Whether you choose the Providence Option or the Shelter Option, the group never really separates. The indoor accommodation is very close to the campsites. We eat together, spend our evenings together and set off together — if you wish, of course 🙂
